NONGPOH: Police on Friday night arrested the RBYF Nongpoh unit general secretary Yougesh Nongrum after he was caught while blocking the highway to obstruct vehicles and then hurling a petrol bomb on a truck at Umdihar, Ri Bhoi during the night road blockade that began at 8 PM.

Police have also arrested a non-tribal for pelting stones at vehicles in Umiam.

Police said the miscreant tried to flee before he was arrested from near the gate to Lum Sohpetbneng.

He was taken to Umiam PS for interrogation.

Reports of stone pelting and hurling of petrol bombs were pouring in from several parts of the district as violence continued on the second night of the road blockade called by the RBYF.

Meanwhile, Ri Bhoi Police have launched an operation to track down RBYF leaders who were allegedly involved in acts of violence on Thursday night.

Miscreants hurled a petrol bomb on a truck in Umsning resulting in injury to the driver and the handyman.

Police conducted raids on the houses of the RBYF leaders but could not trace anyone as all of them have gone into hiding.

Ri Bhoi Superintendent of Police CVS Reddy on Friday informed that five boys – two from Umiam and three from Byrnihat – were picked on suspicion of their involvement in the violent incidents on the national highway, but they were found to be innocent and were released.

Cases have been filed against RBYF members in Umsning and Byrnihat police stations, Reddy informed.
