IMPHAL: Major political parties have decided to urge their central leaders to bring up the issue of implementation of the inner line permit (ILP) system in Manipur in the upcoming Parliament session, a committee said ton Sunday.

The decision to urge their respective central leaders was taken during a joint meeting of the parties on Saturday, a spokesman of the Joint Committee on Inner Line Permit System (JCILPS) in Manipur said.

The JCILPS has been spearheading the stir for implementation of the ILP system in the state for more than a year now.

Representatives of the political parties including CPI, BJP, Trinamool Congress and Manipur People’s Party, during the meeting yesterday said they would work for immediate implementation of the ILP in the state, the JCILPS spokesman said adding that Congress was not represented at the meeting.

He said JCILPS would continue to launch democratic agitations till the implementation of the ILP system in the state because the number of people who have entered the state over the years have outnumbered the total tribal population in the hill districts.

Official sources said the ball was now in the Centre’s court because the Manipur Assembly had resolved to urge the government to initiate steps for implementation of the ILP system during the its session in June last.

Congress leader and Chief Minister O Ibobi Singh had said, if necessary, the government would initiate steps for sending an all-party delegation to Delhi to convince the central leaders about the necessity to introduce ILP in the state. Inner Line Permit is an official travel document issued by the government of India to allow inward travel of an Indian citizen into a protected/restricted area for a limited period. (PTI)
