SHILLONG: Though the Shillong Traffic police declared the Civil Hospital to Barik junction as one way, a few years back, yet there are many drivers who zoom through the one way road at night after traffic sleuths leave the spot.

The Shillong Traffic Police has taken strong note of this act which puts others’ lives at risk and accordingly, traffic police has decided to put up its men in the stretch throughout the night to ensure traffic rules are followed completely. SP (Traffic) NK Syiem on Sunday told reporters that the police will compound vehicles that will not follow the one way route.

“It is very dangerous and people should respect the traffic rules for their own and others safety,” Syiem said.

At present, people have to drive through IGP point to reach Barik point while vehicles coming from Dhankheti side are allowed to proceed to the stretch.

According to Syiem, the STP has decided to put its men at the stretch after several complaints were received that people zoom their vehicles in the stretch at night which is putting the lives of others at risk.

The SP also issued a warning to bikers who drive their two wheelers roughly throughout the city.

It may be mentioned that the STP has flying squads which keeps a tab on over speeding vehicles besides regulating traffic in the city.

According to Syiem, the Traffic police would not show any mercy in compounding local cabbies who often over charge passengers and ply on the routes of their choice.

“If there is any complain from the people we will not spare any local taxis,” Syiem said.

One of the major hurdles for the STP is the lack of manpower as STP at present has strength of around 230 traffic sleuths.

“Our single traffic men are manning around 350 vehicles on a day while vehicles in the city are only increasing and roads remain the same,” he added.
