A 30-year-old man, Daniel Lyngshing, survived after undergoing this two and half-hour long surgery at this premier hospital.

Lyngshing was brought to NEIGRIHMS at the wee hours after he met with an accident.

The accident took place when the Mahindra pick-up truck (ML10A – 3057) Lyngshing was driving was hit by a truck coming from the opposite direction on the Shillong by-pass road just before reaching the junction at Mawryngkneng. He was first taken to Shillong Civil Hospital by the 108 Ambulance and was later shifted to NEIGRIHMS.

Immediately after arrival in the NEIGRIHMS, the casualty incharge Dr. Md.Yunus and his team resuscitated the patient and took decision to operate upon him.

A team of doctors comprising of Dr R Hajong, Associate Professor General Surgery, Dr. Nari Lyngdoh, Associate Professor Anesthesiology along with Dr J Saikia, Dr. Habib and Dr. Vijay swung into action.

Dr. Vijay operated upon the patient and removed the rod that pierced through his liver and a part of the spinal cord. The affected part of the liver was repaired.

According to the doctors, the patient is under observation and he is being kept in ICU on ventilator.

“Since it is a case of poly-trauma along with fracture of the right hand and ribs, we had to keep him in the ICU on ventilator but he is showing good vital status and seems to be out of danger,” Dr. Manuj Kr. Saikia, Chief spokesperson of NEIGRIHMS, said.

“Doctors were horrified to see his injuries,” Dr Saikia said adding that the rod had pierced his abdomen from front to back. “We were not sure if he could be saved. It took almost two and a half hours of meticulous dissection and preservation of vital organs along with repair of liver. It is a miraculous survival story,” he added.

The Chief spokesperson of NEIGRIHMS termed the whole incident as a miraculous escape stating that the accident was fatal and the rod was dangerously close to the heart, aorta, spleen, stomach, pancreas and intestine.

Meanwhile, the Director NEIGRIHMS Dr. AG Ahanger congratulated the team of doctors for this successful surgery.
