SHILLONG: In order to attract more and more students to study science, the State government has announced a special scholarship.
“We would soon introduce a special scholarship for science students,” Chief Minister Dr Mukul Sangma said while speaking at the inaugural session of a two- day International seminar on ‘Attracting Best Talents in Basic Science’, organised by the Shillong College in city on Wednesday.
Making the announcement, Dr Sangma hoped that this would spark up the scientific temper among students and it would motivate students to look at Science not as a phobia but as a branch of study.
Pointing out that the State Government has given top priority to the education sector, he said there was a need for a dynamic approach to improve this sector.
Dr Sangma informed that $100 million has been cleared by the Asian Development Bank (ADB) towards improving the education sector in the State and by the end of 2013 the implementation of different schemes within this sector would start rolling.
“The schemes will include upscaling of primary and secondary education in both urban and rural areas of the State and also imparting training to teachers,” Chief Minister added.
With number of students pursuing science courses decreasing in the state, Dr Sangma informed that the government would provide students computer tablets which are equipped with proper knowledge of information for entrance and competitive examinations.
Prof. K G Bhattacharya of Gauhati University in his keynote address said that there had been a decrease in the number of science students everywhere.
