SHILLONG: The Chief Secretaries of Meghalaya and Assam have been asked to immediately hold meetings to discuss the vexed boundary dispute which has been in news for all the wrong reasons.

Informing this here on Thursday, Chief Minister Dr Mukul Sangma said that he had held discussions with his Assam counterpart Tarun Gogoi on the need for both the Chief Secretaries to hold discussions on the dispute that has been lingering for decades.

It may be noted that Assam Police personnel on Monday last allegedly manhandled women who were protesting against dismantling of the Sabuda Presbyterian LP School kitchen shed in Ri Bhoi.

Dr. Sangma said that both states must carry out developmental works in the inter-state border so that people residing in the ‘areas of difference’ do not suffer.

“Some developmental projects of the Meghalaya Government meant for the border areas are in process,” he told reporters.

There are altogether twelve areas of difference between Assam and Meghalaya.

Reacting to a query on whether Meghalaya is open to the idea of give and take policy to solve the dispute, the Chief Minister said any solution should be acceptable to the people of the State.

“The dispute has to be resolved through proper negotiation and there should not be any situation of mistrust between both states,” the Chief Minister added.
