Shillong: Closed-circuit television (CCTV) cameras and mobile phone recorders have cumulatively become a game changer in reporting and tackling crime.
Recognising the valuable part that CCTV can play in tackling crime, the State Police have joined hands with Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL) to install CCTV in different locations of the city.
Informing this to newsmen recently, BSNL General Manager M John Chrisostom said that both BSNL and State police were presently studying the feasibility of the project.
While refusing to divulge anything about the locations where the CCTV cameras would be installed, the BSNL official only said that the project would go a long way in providing feedback to police about any untoward incidents that takes place on the streets of Shillong.
“Study is going to find out the places where these cameras will be installed and what type of cameras will be installed,” he said.
He said that the State police is working to finalize the project within three to four months.
Under this system, all the feeds recorded in the CCTV cameras will be sent to the Central Control Room and these footages in turn will facilitate the police to collect necessary evidence in the sought-after cases.
The system is expected to help in improving the law and order situation in the city.
The cameras will cover the entire city once the project becomes fully operational. Earlier the State Police had asked commercial establishments in Shillong to install CCTV cameras.
