SHILLONG: Miffed with the decision of Amlarem SDO (Civil) NAK Syiem to re-allow mining in Nongtalang area of West Jaintia Hills, the leaders of the Tylli I-hun ka Nongtalang, the Dorbar Shnong Mission Nongtalang and the Banan locality on Wednesday met the West Jaintia Hills Deputy Commissioner and urged him re-impose Section 144 CrPC.

Environmentalist HH Mohrmen said that after the lapse of sixty days which falls on August 5, the Deputy Commissioner was to review his decision to impose Section 144 CrPC for stopping illegal mining in Nongtalang.

HH Mohrmen also said that on the basis of the letter of the Deputy Commissioner, the SDO (Civil) NAK Syiem allowed mining in the area in spite of the fact that none of the miners had obtained any mining lease or forest clearance from the competent authority.

“This blatant violation of the Forest Act and total disregard to the Supreme Court order which says that mining in less than 5 hectares of land too required mining license,” the environmentalist said.

The leaders have asked the Deputy Commissioner to re-impose Section 144 CrPC in the area as nothing had changed since the order was last promulgated on June 8.

Tylli i-hun ka Nongtalang has also threatened to agitate if the district administration does not re-impose Section 144 CrPC in the area within a week.
