SHILLONG: The Social Organizations of Meghalaya against Land Alienation (SOMALA) has demanded that bonafide land deals must be set out as a pre-condition for any subsidy to any company for any purpose.

The statement came from SOMALA after the Union Cabinet approved an Rs 86.09 crore subsidy to Adhunik Cements, Meghalaya.

In a statement issued here on Friday, SOMALA convenor W Anthony said that the grant of subsidy to Adhunik Cements Limited is a slap in the face of the tribal people of Meghalaya who have suffered due to random acquisition of their land by companies without any bonafide land deals.

The SOMALA also took a dig at the State Government for neglecting the enforcement of penal provisions of Meghalaya Transfer of Land Regulation Act 1971 since the inception of the Act 42 years ago.
