SHILLONG: In what would provide a platform for budding pugilists in the State and give a boost to the sport, the State Government has decided to fund the construction of six boxing rings in Meghalaya.
Informing this on Friday, president of the Meghalaya Boxing Association, John F Kharshiing said that the boxing rings are likely to come up in East Khasi Hills, West Khasi Hills, Ri Bhoi, Jaintia Hills, East Garo Hills and West Garo Hills with a cost of Rs 3.50 lakh per boxing ring.
Meanwhile, two professionals of the Meghalaya Boxing Association have received managed a diploma in professional coaching from the National Institute of Sports.
Boxing championship in Ri Bhoi
The Meghalaya Boxing Association in collaboration with Ri Bhoi District Boxing Association will organise the second State Sub Junior Boxing Championship from September 4-6 at NSCA stadium in Nonpoh.
The MBA through the proposed event aims to promote and encourage the sport in the State.
“This is a beginning and subsequently we will move to other districts,” Kharshiing told reporters.
