SHILLONG: In a bid to check frequent accidents and crimes along the Shillong bye-pass, the State government is contemplating to open a separate traffic branch.

According to Home Minister Roshan Warjri, government is planning to set up the traffic branch at the full fledged Mawryngkneng police station which was inaugurated on Wednesday.

Government will open a traffic branch to manage traffic thereby decreasing the rate of accidents occurring in the bye-pass and the highways.

Regarding the reports of crimes taking place on the highway, Meghalaya DGP PJP Haneman has stressed on the need for police to be vigilant all along the highway and the Shillong bye-pass since the stretch was prone to dacoity and other criminal activities.

Police outpost to curb anti-social acts

The State Government is looking into the possibility of setting up a police outpost at Diengpasoh to tackle anti-social activities all along the Shillong bye-pass stretch.

Accompanied by local MLA David Nongrum, Home Minister Roshan Warjri on Wednesday inspected the site for the construction of this police outpost.

However, the site is yet to be finalized as the Government is yet to approach the Dorbar Shnong for acquiring the land. “We are confident that the Dorbar heads will not hesitate to part with the selected land for the benefit of the people at the same time, preventing criminal activities from happening along this stretch,” Nongrum said.

Nongrum also mentioned that the setting up of this police outpost would bring about a smooth and easy movement of trucks preventing miscreants from committing dacoity and extortion.
