SHILLONG: The Meghalaya State Women Commission (MSCW) has condemned the reported attack on a female staff at the offices of the Deputy Commissioner and the District Rural Development Agency in West Garo Hills during the bandh called by the pro-Statehood groups on Tuesday.

“We are shocked that the agitators attacked the two offices and ‘molested’ and threatened women staff to the extent that many of them broke down,” MSCW Chairperson Theilin Phanbuh said in a statement on Wednesday.

She said that a woman from Mumbai was also reported molested and assaulted by the agitators at Tura.

“All those who are involved should be taken to task as per the law,” Phanbuh demanded.

Meanwhile, the Youth Congress also condemned the attack on female staff of the DC’s office and the DRDA office in Tura by elements who claim to be agitating for the interest of the people.

“Is molestation and assault the way to agitate for a State?” the Youth Congress questioned, while stating that the leaders of the statehood movement should be held responsible for the assault and molestation.

“Since Clifford Marak is the leader of this movement, he should take moral responsibility and resign as MLA,” the Youth Congress demanded.
