Project to go on despite Dorbar opposition: Hek
SHILLONG: Despite the opposition of the Dorbar Shnong of Mawpat Umsawli to the construction of the Reid Chest Hospital at Umsawli, the Health and Family Welfare department has stated that the project to shift the hospital would not be abandoned.
The State Government is proposing to shift the Reid Chest (TB) Hospital from Jhalupara in the city to Umsawli to pave for the construction of the Shillong Medical College and Hospital.
Speaking to a group of journalists here, Health and Family Welfare Minister AL Hek said, “If the shifting is not allowed the progress of the Shillong Medical College project would be surely hampered.
“I have seen the site (at Umsawli) and I think it is an ideal location for the Hospital,” Hek said.
Earlier, the Dorbar Shnong of Mawpat Umsawli had stopped the ongoing construction work of the Reid Chest (TB) Hospital, alleging that the work was started without obtaining the mandatory no objection certificate (NOC) from the Dorbar Shnong.
The State Health and Family Welfare department is busy preparing the plans and estimates of the much awaited Shillong Medical College to come up in the city and Government has mulled to make the hospital functional by May, 2017 by admitting the first batch of medical students in the College.
The State Government has inked a concessionaire agreement with the Kolkata-based KPC Group for construction of the Shillong Medical College under the Public-Private-Partnership (PPP) mode.
The proposed 500-bedded Shillong Medical College at Jhalupara, to come up in a 23.8 acre plot of land, will cater to over 200,000 patients every year.
