SHILLONG: Despite many cases of benami transactions in the State, not a single complaint has been lodged with the Government in the last 33 years.

Government had enacted Meghalaya (Benami Transaction Prohibition) Act 1980 to prevent illegal business practices through benami system.

The Act assumes significance in the context of the demand of the pressure groups to implement ILP system to regulate influx of outsiders.

No complaint has come from those who are engaging in benami transactions with the non indigenous persons so far as the transaction had benefitted both the parties.

An amendment to the Act was brought by Government in 1985.

Though the issue of revisiting the Act was raised by legislators Paul Lyngdoh and Ardent Basaiawmoit in the Assembly session held in April, there was no favourable reply from Government.

In his reply, Chief Minister Dr Mukul Sangma had said that people have to take cognize of the Act.
