Night road blockade: No let up in arson cases

Miscreants target patrol team in city

SHILLONG: There has been no let-up in the violent incidents during the night road blockade on Thursday as miscreants hurled petrol bomb targeting a patrol team of magistrates and police at around 11. 40 pm at Mawiong.

However, no one was injured in the incident.

Police arrested one Ferdinand Skhemiew (22) organizing secretary, KSU Mawlai Mawiongrim in this connection and an empty bottle was recovered from his possession.

Police said one more person was involved in the crime.

In yet another incident on Thursday night, miscreants threw a petrol bomb at a Government vehicle (Bolero – MLO14148) allotted to Francis Kharshiing, District Housing Officer, Nongstoin which was parked at the compound of one Belis M Nongrum at Lawsohtun, Block 5.

According to police, there was no damage to the vehicle as it was detected timely by the tenants who put off the fire.

There was an attempt to torch a bike at Lawsip under Madanriting police station on Thursday night resulting in partial damage to the two-wheeler.

According to reports, miscreants also made an attempt to hurl kerosene bombs at GSI office, Nongrim Hills, but in vain.

There was a spurt in the incidents of arson elsewhere in the State.

Miscreants made several attempts to burn down Government offices in other districts.

On Thursday, miscreants set on fire one Vocational Training Office belonging to Veterinary Department at Kyrdemkulai, Ri Bhoi . Police arrested two persons – Rilang Thongni and Michael Mynsong -in this connection.

In yet another case in Ri Bhoi, a house belonging to Gautam Pradhan at Saiden Umlaper around 5 km from Nongpoh, was partially damaged after the miscreants threw petrol bomb at around 2 am.

Pradhan and his family members were sleeping when the miscreants targeted their house.

In another incident, in a petrol bomb attack, a bolero belonging to AMRIT Cement was partially damaged at around 9 pm at Umsning.

Unknown miscreants on Wednesday at around 3 am attempted to set fire the Office of Range Officer, Soil & Water Conservation Range at Thadlaskein, West Jaintia Hills. The matter is under investigation.

A rearing house of the Sericulture Department at Moodymmai village was allegedly set on fire by unknown miscreant on Thursday morning. The Manager of the Foreign Race Seed Station, Sericulture and Weaving Department, B Mawthoh informed that the damage was estimated at Rs. 16 lakh.

Moreover, miscreants on September 10 night, attempted to set fire to the Veterinary Dispensary at Thad-Muthlong ,West Jaintia Hills

The miscreants also defaced the fencing and the office walls of the Office of BDO at Mawkyrwat (SWKH) with the inscriptions such as “No ILP, No rest”,” We demand ILP” on September 9 ( with inputs from our Nongpoh, Jowai correspondents)
