Imphal: Manipur Chief Minister Okram Ibobi Singh would request Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and Union Home Minister Sushilkumar Shinde to resume erection of fencing along Myanmar border only after a proposed re-survey of areas in Chandel district.

Otherwise, there was a possibility that several Indian villages might fall within the territory of the neighbouring country, officials said here on Friday.

The chief minister and his deputy Gaikhangam, who also holds the home portfolio, left for New Delhi last evening to meet the central leaders.

The state cabinet and various political parties including the ruling Congress have in separate memorandum urged the Centre to initiate steps for re-survey of the undemarcated borderline before erection of the border fencing, particularly near the town of Moreh but no concrete steps had been taken so far, they said.

The erection of border fencing near Moreh has been stopped following demand for resurvey of ‘undemarcated’ areas.

Although the central government had intimated the Indian ambassador to Myanmar to approach the authorities there for a re-survey of the borderline, that was yet to be done.

Ibobi Singh and Gaikhangam would also discuss with the central leaders the Census report of 2011 in three sub-divisions of Mao Maram, Paomata and Purul in Senapati district.

The state government was ‘not satisfied’ with the 2011 census report of the three sub-divisions. (PTI)

12-hour general strike in Manipur on Saturday

Imphal: The Maoist Communist Party Manipur (MCPM) has called a 12-hour general strike in the state from 5 am on Saturday, the foundation day of the Regional Institute of Medical Science and Hospital (RIMSH) here.

A statement signed of the outfit on Friday said the strike was called in protest against the ‘mismanagement’ of the RIMSH authorities. Educational institutions, media, water supply, electricity and religious functions would be exempted from the purview of the strike, the statement said.
