Vishwakarma Puja performed throughout Manipur

Imphal: Vishwakarma Puja was performed in most of the engineering departments of Manipur on Tuesday. Prayers were held with machines being washed and cleaned. Puja was also performed in most workshops, offices, printing houses. Due to the puja all workshops, factories ceased work today. Grand feasts were also organised in all the important offices, engineering cells and workshops as part of the day. Employees in engineering cells were also given gifts on the occasion. (UNI)

US-made pistol seized, one held

Agartala: West Tripura police have arrested a person and seized one US-made pistol with magazine from his possession here. Acting on a tip-off, the police arrested one James Debbarma (26) on Monday. Police said Debarrama was a resident of Khowai and his family, had a track record of several insurgent activities. Accused Debbarma was arrested and produced before the Court which remanded him to five days police custody. Police was investigating the source and motive of procurement of arms. Immigration officials of Akhaura check post of Agartala at Indo-Bangladesh border have detained a Nigerian national while going to Bangladesh on Monday. He was handed over to police immediately. Initial investigation claimed the person had travelled from Bangalore to Kolkata and Agartala by flight with an expired Visa and he was travelling to Bangladesh claiming to be a tourist.(UNI)

Many houses swept away by flood waters in Mizoram

Aizawl: Around 100 houses on the banks of the Tlawng river in Mizoram-Assam border Bairabi town were swept away by flood during the past two weeks, Disaster Management and Rehabilitation department officials in Kolasib district said on Tuesday. Heavy monsoon downpours in the state caused the Tlawng river, the largest and longest river in Mizoram, to sour extremely high creating havoc along the banks having no protected walls, the sources said. Five houses, including a church building belonging to the Isua Krista Kohhran church were dismantled during the past one week while no one has so far died due to flood, they said. The flood also left trails of destruction on the low-lying cultivation areas damaging paddy and other crops, the officials added. (PTI)

BJP starts campaigning for Lok Sabha elections

Imphal: Bhartiya Janata Party (BJP), Manipur has started preparing for Lok Sabha elections. BJP is likely to contest in both the Outer and Inner Manipur Parliamentary Constituencies. Outer seat is reserved for ST. Vice- President of BJP Manipur , Th Nandakishwor Singh said former Minister Prof Gangmumei Kamei will contest in Outer Manipur Parliamentary Constituency . He however said the candidate for Inner Manipur has not yet been finalises. BJP Manipur chief and former Union Minister Th Chaoba is likely to contest according to BJP sources. Nandakishwor said the Congress is expecting good returns from the Food Security Bill however it will not be so. He alleged that prices of lowest grade of rice in Manipur is Rs 25 per kg and as there is no proper connectivity with the rest of the world the scheme may not kick off well he said. Even the normal public distribution system is not working well in the state he charged. He further said as the government has also not performed well in view of the repeated blasts, bad power supply hence there is possibility of people not supporting Congress this time. Both the seats are now represented by Congress in the state. Election campaigning will begin soon it was added. (UNI)

Arunachal studying Mizoram’s NLUP project

Aizawl: The Nabam Tuki government in Arunachal Pradesh is studying Mizoram Chief Minister’s New Land Use Policy being implemented in Mizoram as it wants to implement NLUP like projects in Arunachal Pradesh. An official statement on Tuesday said that Arunachal Pradesh State Land Use Board Director Joram Puppa was in Aizawl to study how the Mizoram government implemented the New Land Use Policy (NLUP), the flagship programme of the Congress government. The statement said that Puppa met R. Selthuama, Chairman of the NLUP Implementing Board, officials of the NLUP Marketing Cell and line departments here on Monday. Lal Thanhawla instructed the NLUP Implementing Board officials and all the other people involved in the implementation of the NLUP to extend all possible cooperation to Puppa. Puppa said that the Arunachal Pradesh government wanted to implement the NLUP-like project called the Integrated Socio-Economic Programme’ in that state and had approached the Planning Commission and the Central leaders for funding. He asked the Mizoram government to enlighten him so that the Arunachal Pradesh government would smoothly implement the programme, the statement added. (PTI)

Weaves from Seven Sisters to wow Kolkata

Kolkata: Exotic prints and weaves of the northeastern states, blended with West Bengal’s ‘kantha’ will be showcased here during a week-long exhibition beginning Friday. The Seven Sisters exhibition at the Weavers Studio will exhibit products culled from each of the seven states in the northeast, including the intricate loin loom weaves, and workshops. Loin loom or back-strap loom is a portable bamboo loom popular in Manipur, Tripura, Nagaland and some parts of Assam. “We have tunics from our studio which will have the motifs from the northeast with kantha stitch done on it. There will be nine-yard sarees with those designs. Furnishings like cushion covers, and table linen will also be part of it,” Darshan Shah, founder-trustee of the studio, told IANS. From Assam the symbolic ‘chaador’ or wrap and the characteristic temple designs of Manipur will vie for attention at the exhibition. (IANS)
