B.A. student commits suicide

Kanpur: A B.A. student allegedly committed suicide by consuming poison here, police said on Wednesday. Kamal Gupta (20), a B.A. II-year student and the only son of Rajkumar Gupta, took the extreme step Tuesday, they said. Family members claimed that Kamal was depressed for over some days because of his studies. The body has been sent for autopsy by police and a probe is on in the case. (PTI)

Couple kill child, commit suicide

Ambala: A couple killed their six-year-old son before committing suicide allegedly due to unemployment and abysmal poverty. Rajeev Sabharwal (43) and his wife Renu (38) gave poison to their son Tushar (6) before consuming it themselves Wednesday morning. Rajeev was unemployed for the last two years and under depression for not being able to pay various debts, police said. “His (Rajeev) relatives were offering him financial help, but it was not sufficient to run the family,” a police official said. A suicide note, recovered from the spot, read that no one should be held accountable for the extreme step. (PTI)

Women protest against illicit liquor

Gorakhpur (UP): A group of 400 women from four villages here raided several illegal distilleries in Tiwaripur area and destroyed five hundred litres of country-made liquor. The illegal liquor units in Bahrampur and Basiadeeh villages were raided and destroyed on Tuesday, police said on Wednesday. Various women associations and Mahila Mandals active in the area held a meeting at Basiadeeh chauraha and took a pledge to end the menace of country-made liquor. The death of Bhagwati Nishad, an elderly person of Bahrampur village in one of the illegal liquor sale outlets, due to alleged thrashing by a youth sparked the protest, police said. (PTI)

Tension in Bharatpur after miscreants pelt stones at gurdwara

Bharatpur: Tension prevailed in the Budh Ki Hat area here after some members of a community allegedly pelted stones at a gurdwara, leaving four persons injured. “Some miscreants from a community pelted stones at the gurdwara where food was being served during langar (community meal) Tuesday night. The incident left four persons injured who were given treatment at the district hospital,” police said. Stones were pelted from a nearby house when power went off in the gurdwara for some time, police said. The incident led to tension in the Budh Ki Hat area where members of both the communities confronted each other, police said, adding that there were also reports of shots being fired in the air. Five persons have been arrested and the situation in the area is under control now, police said. (PTI)

Minister, driver help rescue seven from sinking car

Shimoga (Ktk): Playing the good samaritan, a Karnataka minister and his driver helped rescue a family of seven whose car fell into a tank near Beguvali in Shimoga district. Primary and Secondary Education Minister Kimmane Ratnakar was travelling from his home town Theerthahalli to Bangalore in his official vehicle escorted by a police van on Tuesday when a car overtook them on a rain drenched road. Shortly thereafter, Ratnakar said they noticed the same car carrying seven persons, including two women and a one-year child, sinking in a tank with one occupant flailing her arms from the window, at which they stopped their vehicle. Ratnakar said his driver K Chandru jumped into the tank and within minutes, he grabbed the two women who were holding a child and brought them ashore. The four men were also saved with help from others. Incidentally, none of the five personnel in the minister’s police escort knew swimming. The Minister said it was sheer luck of the travellers and praised his driver for his brave effort. Chandru said the almighty saved their lives through his hand. The Minister took all the seven persons who were slightly injured in his car to Theerthahlli and helped them get first aid at a government hospital. (PTI)

One killed, three injured in road mishap

Greater Noida: A person was killed and four others critically injured when a car hit the divider before banging into the side rails of a flyover at Zero Point of Yamuna Expressway on Wednesday, police said. The victims were travelling from Sikohabad to Greater Noida when the mishap occurred, leaving the car hanging dangerously from the side rails, police said. The car had got stuck and was hanging at a height of 40 feet from the flyover railing which made the rescue operation difficult for police, forcing them to press cranes into operation and pull down the car after rescuing the passengers, they said. It took two hours to rescue the victims stuck inside, they said, adding that they were rushed to a nearby hospital where one was declared brought dead, while a woman’s arm had to be amputated. (PTI)
