SHILLONG: The East Jaintia Hills District Congress Committee (EJHDCC) has endorsed the decision of the Congress-led MUA Government to reject the demand of the NGOs for implementing the ILP.

In a statement issued here on Thursday, EJHDCC president, Shitlang Pale, informed that the executive committee meeting held on September 17, 2013 held threadbare discussion on the impact of the ongoing agitation by interest groups who are demanding introduction of ILP.

“As of now, the influx as interpreted by the NGOs and other political parties add no values to the ground realities since the existing parameters such as the Sixth Schedule to the Constitution of India which provides ample scopes and opportunities to safeguard the interest and identity of the indigenous people,” the statement read, adding, “Hence the meeting resolved to request the government and the NGOs not to implement the outdated and ineffective ILP but work out more realistic and effective mechanisms to address the issue of influx and illegal immigration.”

The EJHDCC also resolved to urge the government to improve and give more teeth to the existing laws to protect the rights and interests of the indigenous tribes of Meghalaya.
