Holding of Panchayat elections demanded

Imphal : Panchayat elections for Gram Panchayats at Senapati district were not held in 2007 due to threats by militants to the candidates.

Villagers of the five GP namely, Kanglatombi, Kalapahar, Toribari, Santolabari and Koubru Leikha have urged the state government to hold elections immediately.

The Manipur Gorkha Welfare Union, Reformist Students Union, Nepali Sahitya Parishad , Gorkha Students Union said due to non holding of elections benefits under various schemes were not reaching the five GPs.

The villagers moved the High Court which has ruled that elections be held. The authority has not decided to conduct elections so far. If the government fails to conduct elections the three organisations threatened to launch a stir.

Elections could not be held as all the candidates withdrew in the last Panchayat elections. (UNI)
