U-14 boys leave for Subroto Cup

SHILLONG: A 16-member squad left Shillong on Wednesday for the Sub Junior Subroto Cup Football Tournament, to be held in New Delhi.

The under-14 boys are being led by coach Bobby L Nongbet and Manager Dilip Mongar.

The Subroto Cup is an inter-school tournament organised at a national level.

The U-17 teams (boys and girls) will depart in a few days time.

St Anthony’s school won the state-level tournament, but their ranks were added to by the Directorate of Sports and Youth Affairs, who have included seven players from different schools to boost the team.

At a simple send-off for the team on Wednesday, the boys were urged to take advantage of the opportunity that the tournament will provide them.

FM Dopth, the Director of Sports and Youth Affairs explained that boys were chosen from other schools “with the aim and purpose to expose their talent.

“This tournament can be a springboard for the future,” he added.

Teams from Meghalaya have won the boys’ U-17 title twice and the U-14 trophy once before and their success was referred to by the some of the speakers.
