SHILLONG: The National Green Tribunal has passed an order restraining any person, company or authority to carry out any mining activities or removal of sand from river beds anywhere in the country without obtaining environmental clearance.

The order came in the wake of mass destruction of the environment due to unscientific mining being carried out by individuals or companies as is the case in Jaintia Hills where mass forest covers have been reduced due to mining.

Informing this here on Monday, the Deputy Commissioner East Khasi Hills, Sanjay Goyal said that no one will be allowed to carry out mining activities without acquiring clearance from the ministry of forest and environment, state environment impact assessment authority and license from the competent authority.
