SHILLONG: Concerned about the safety of children and annoyed at non-compliance on the part of the State governments and the authorities concerned with the directions of the Supreme Court order asking for measure to be put in place for prevention of incidents of children falling into abandoned bore-well, the National Commissioner for Protection of Child Rights has asked the Meghalaya Government to send a detailed report on the measures taken to prevent such accidents.

The NCPCR has asked the State Government to send the report in a month’s time

The Supreme Court recently asked all the States to cap all discarded and abandoned borewells in their territories and to properly fence all working wells to prevent small children falling into them. The Supreme Court subsequently modified the guidelines and as per the thirteen modified guidelines registration of all the drilling agencies with the district administration was made mandatory.

The Court in its guideline also said that barbed wire fencing should be erected around the well during construction
