SHILLONG: The State Government has filed a case against all the pro-ILP organisations including those from Garo Hills in a special court headed by R. Rymbai, who is the first class magistrate.
An official source on Thursday said that the case was filed before the designated court on October 15.
The State Government filed a single case against all the organizations involved in the prolonged agitation over ILP.
It was on October 2 that the Chief Minister Dr Mukul Sangma announced his Government’s intention to try the cases especially involving the destruction of property and disturbance of peace against the pro-ILP organisations.
Armed with the orders of Supreme Court and the Gauhati High Court on ban on bandhs and agitations, Government wanted the NGOs to compensate for the losses to property during the agitations.
Earlier, Government had asked the respective deputy commissioners to assess the damages caused during the agitations by the pro-ILP groups to be included in the petition to be filed before the special court.
It was after getting the sanction from the Meghalaya High Court that the State Government decided to set up the special court.
However, the petition of the Government before the special court is likely to be a one sided affair as the NGOs fighting for the implementation of ILP is unlikely to appoint any lawyer to defend their case.
