SHILLONG: The State Sports Council of Meghalaya – an autonomous body that creates and maintains sports infrastructure – had constructed 179 different sports facilities in the state, but the Comptroller and Auditor General rued the fact that many are woefully maintained in his report for the year 2011-12.
For example, there were a total of 43 indoor sports halls (ISH) in the state by 2012, but many were in appalling condition.
Of the 39 facilities inspected by the auditors, one-third were found to be in a dilapidated state.
The SSCM only maintains seven of the completed projects, with the rest handed over to clubs, schools, dorbar shnong, etc and the CAG describes this practice as “not entirely satisfactory”.
In some cases the SSCM could not provide information as to who the various facilities had been handed over to.
The table below details some of the auditors’ findings.
