Justice Sapre takes oath as CJ of Gauhati High Court

Guwahati: Justice Abhay Manohar Sapre was sworn in as the new Chief Justice of Gauhati High Court on Saturday.

Governor of Assam Janaki Ballav Patnaik administered the oath of office to Justice Sapre at a ceremony held at Durbar Hall of Raj Bhawan in Guwahati.

Assam Minister for Law, etc., Tanka Bahadur Rai, Chief Secretary to the Government of Assam, Jitesh Khosla, Director General of Police, Assam, Jayanto Narayan Choudhury, senior members of the judiciary, officers of the State Government and other officials were present at the swearing-in ceremony.

Born on August 28, 1954, at Jabalpur in Madhya Pradesh, Justice Sapre studied at Model High School, Jabalpur and graduated in Bachelor of Arts from Government Arts College, Jabalpur.

He obtained his LL.B. degree from University Teaching Department (VTD) Jabalpur, University of Jabalpur.

Enrolled as Advocate in the High Court of Madhya Pradesh on January 21, 1978, Justice Sapre has practised in Civil, Constitutional, Taxation, Company Law and Labour Laws and was a standing counsel for the Income Tax Department in the Madhya Pradesh High Court. He was appointed as Additional Judge of the High Court of Madhya Pradesh on October 25, 1999 and as Permanent Judge on October 24, 2001.

He was transferred to Rajasthan High Court and assumed charge at the Principal Seat, Jodhpur on February 11, 2010.

Justice Sapre has also functioned as Judge of the Chhattisgarh High Court from April 23, 2012 to March 20, 2013. He was elevated as the first Chief Justice of the High Court of Manipur on March 23 this year.
