Dorbar’s role under scanner

SHILLONG: The preliminary inquiry report into the Smit incident, in which three persons were hacked to death by villagers on the pretext of practicing witchcraft on August 16, has questioned the role of Dorbar.

At least 12 people including women were arrested soon after the incident

As per the preliminary report prepared by Additional District magistrate DM Wahlang, the Dorbar should have been vigilant to prevent the incident when the crowd had gathered on the spot which resulted in the violent incident.

The report, however, did not find any relation between witchcraft and the killing of three persons, the East Khasi Hills Deputy Commissioner Sanjay Goyal said.

The magistrate suggested detailed investigation on the matter and the task is on, Goyal said.

Moreover, the magistrate is yet to take the statement of Lam Nongrum on whom the slain persons allegedly practised witchcraft.

Nongrum, who was suffering from mental illness, was admitted at MIMHANS a year ago. Wahlang is to submit full report on the incident shortly.
