Guwahati: Decomposed bodies of two girls have been recovered from near the Lokpriya Gopinath Bordoloi International Airport at Borjhar, on the outskirts of Guwahati, leading to sensation in the area.
Preliminary reports suggested that the girls, who are yet to be identified, were victims of gangraped and were murdered after being assaulted.
Four people have been arrested and a vehicle seized in this connection so far.
However, interrogation of the arrested people have now revealed that one of the girl died in an accident on the spot and the other succumbed later, with evidence corroborating the story.
City SSP A P Tiwari said the seized vehicle was involved in an accident near Borjhar-Azara on the wee hours of October 23 and was taken into police custody, along with the driver and two passengers.
Interrogation of the driver, Kishore Das, led to the recovery of the two bodies, one yesterday and another today.
” As per the driver’s version, he and his two friends (arrested from the vehicle) had picked up the two girls, who were acquaintances, from VIP Road (near Azara).
They drove to a remote location, spent about five-six hours together and also had dinner before heading back for VIP Road,” Tiwari said.
As the driver was in an inebriated state, he took an arterial road to avoid police checking and met with an accident, leading to the death of one of the girl on the spot and critical injury to the other, the SSP said, quoting the driver’s statement.
The driver and his friends decided to dump the bodies in bushes on the wayside to avoid police hassles after the vehicle-owner, whom they called from the spot, refused to help them out.
“The evidence we have found so far, including injury on the victims’ bodies and the driver’s face and the spot of accident, corroborate the driver’s version. We will wait for medical reports and a thorough probe before a final conclusion,’ Tiwari said.
The vehicle-owner has also been arrested.
The SSP denied initial reports of a gangrape of the victims and subsequent murder. (UNI)
