ILP stir: Arson cases
SHILLONG: With the arrest of another FKJGP leader under the Meghalaya Preventive Detention Act (MPDA), altogether three pro-ILP activists have been booked under this Act till date.
East Khasi Hills police chief M Kharkrang informed that FKJGP publicity secretary Reginald Thabah has been booked under MPDA and he is presently lodged in Williamnagar jail.
The FKJGP leader was arrested from Kyrbom, Lower Mawprem while he was moving in an ambulance (ML05 J 3341) belonging to his organisation, ostensibly to commit some crime.
Earlier, police slapped MPDA on a FKJGP leader Eldie N Lyngdoh who was arrested by Ri Bhoi police for his involvement in throwing petrol bomb at a puja pandal in Umsning.
The president of HANM’s West Khasi Hills unit Arphul Kharbani has been booked under MPDA for his alleged involvement in some arson cases in Nongstoin.
Meanwhile, HANM’s West Khasi Hills unit has challenged the district administration to prove the association’s involvement in arson cases in Nongstoin while demanding the withdrawal of MPDA slapped on Kharbani within 48 hours.
Kharbani was arrested on September 26 by the Shillong Police for his alleged involvement in the torching of two offices, the PWD (Roads) Office and the Meghalaya Khadi and Village Industries Board at Nongstoin and an attempt to burn the Fisheries Office at Nongpyndeng, Nongstoin in the wee hours of September 9.
The HANM also demanded immediate transfer of the district deputy commissioner S Kharlyngdoh.
Irked by the adamant attitude of the state government in addressing the various grievances of people of the district, the vice president HANM’s West Khasi Hills unit Wills Sohshang said that the union would announce a series of agitations shortly.
