Huge consignment of drugs seized in Nongpoh

NONGPOH: In yet another major crackdown by the Ri Bhoi police in the wee hours of Thursday, three smugglers were arrested and a huge consignment of banned narcotics items was seized from their possession.

One smuggler however managed to escape. These smugglers were on their way from Calcutta to Tripura.

The three smugglers have been identified as Atanu Deb (30) from Jagandra Nagar, West Tripura, Rajesh Debhnath (28) and Prasantjit Ghosh (29) both from East Srinagar West Tripura, while over 1805 bottles of Phensedyl was seized from their possession.

According to police sources, on getting the proper information over the transportation of the smugglers who were coming on their way from Calcutta to Tripura with huge amount of narcotics items, the police immediately set up a trap at Nongpoh (NH 40 near DIC office) and easily intercepted the smugglers along with the consignment who were traveling on a Tata Sumo bearing registration number AS 01 K 5056.

Police informed that manner of consignments being transported was exactly similar to the case were three smugglers were arrested recently from Byrnihat Police Outpost as the consignment was well concealed inside the sumo side light, dash board and door of the Tata Sumo.

The smugglers were using the Sumo with three unregistered number plates MZ 01 D 8075, TR 01 AK 0714 and ML 10 DL 5056.

The three smugglers have been remanded to police custody for further interrogation.
