BJP MLA’s judicial custody extended in Muzaffarnagar riot case

Muzaffarnagar: The judicial custody of BJP MLA Suresh Rana, arrested for allegedly inciting communal violence in Muzaffarnagar by making provocative speeches, has been extended till November 20 by a local court here. Additional Chief Judicial Magistrate Narendra Kumar yesterday extended the judcial custody of the MLA from Thana Bhawan in riot-affected Shamli district for another 14 days. Rana was arrested in Lucknow on September 20 on charges of making a provocative speech to incite the riots in Muzaffarnagar and adjoining areas, which claimed over 60 lives and displaced thousands of others. Cong leader commits suicide after being denied poll ticket

Shajapur(MP): A Congress leader, who was denied party ticket from the district’s Agar constituency for the November 25 Madhya Pradesh Assembly elections, allegedly committed suicide on Thursday, police said. Narsingh Malaviya (40), who was under depression for the last one week, consumed poison this morning at his residence in Agar in a bid to end his life, they said. He was rushed to a hospital in Ujjain in a serious condition, where he succumbed, they said. Narsingh, an office-bearer in the district party unit, was said to be a strong supporter of Congress MP Sajjan Singh Verma, who also stated that the leader was under depression after he was refused a ticket to contest the elections. Pune mishap: Car, bodies of 3 other missing youths recovered

Pune: The mysterious disappearance of four city-based advertisement professionals finally proved to be a case of accident as rescue workers on Thursday fished out their car from Nira river along with the bodies of the three remaining occupants, who had set out on an excursion on November 1. The search for the missing car had been undertaken by police and National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) rescue workers after body of one of the four occupants of the vehicle – Chintan Buch (28) – was recovered on Wednesday, indicating possibility of the car crashing over a bridge on river Nira along Pune-Banglore highway. After pulling out the car with the help of crane and recovering bodies of three other victims – Pranav Lele (29), Sahil Qureshi (28) and Shrutika Chandvani – police officials said prima facie it appeared to be an accident. The group was supposed to drop 28-year-old Shrutika at her home at Kolhapur on their way to Karnataka. The car was last spotted at a toll check post at Khed on the highway. The relatives of the victims had lodged a missing complaint after their cell phones became unreachable on November 2. While Chintan’s body was recovered from the river water, the other three victims remained in the car as they had their seat belts fastened, police added. The three bodies extricated from the car were sent for post-mortem. Autopsy of Chintan, who hailed from Vadodara, confirmed death by drowning. (PTI)

Fire in hospital; doctor killed

Mumbai: A 27-year-old doctor was killed after a fire broke out in a private hospital in the central suburb of Mulund here, civic officials said on Thursday. The blaze broke out in Gokul Hospital last night following which five fire engines, five water tankers and an ambulance were rushed to the spot, according to the disaster cell of Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation. The victim identified as Dr Rahul was killed in the blaze, officials said. The fire may have been triggered by a short-circuit, they said, adding the exact reason is yet to be ascertained. (PTI)

Two displaced riot victims die

Muzaffarnagar: Two persons, including a 16-year-old boy, who had taken shelter in a relief camp after they were displaced during Muzaffarnagar riots, died. Taslim (16) died at a hospital after suffering from fever while a 65-year-old man, Noruddin died at a relief camp in Loee village due to cardiac arrest on Wednesday, police said. Some local villagers alleged that the two died because they were not treated on time. The communal clashes in Muzaffarnagar in September and its adjoining areas had claimed over 60 lives and displaced over thousands of others. After riots, 41 relief camps were set up in Muzaffarnagar while 17 were set up in Shamli. (PTI)

Muslim leader expelled from BKU

Muzaffarnagar: A Muslim leader of the Bharatiya Kisan Union (BKU) was expelled from the outfit allegedly for anti-organisation activities, fuelling speculation of a rift within the union following the recent communal riots here. Senior BKU leader Gulam Mohammed Jolla, who was a close associate of late farmer leader Mahendra Singh Tikait, was expelled from the union over anti-organisation activities yesterday. BKU Chief Naresh Tikait confirmed the expulsion. Jolla, who had launched his own separate organisation over differences with BKU Chief Naresh Tikait in the aftermath of Muzaffarnagar riots, condemned the leadership of BKU Chief Naresh Tikait and his brother Rakesh Tikait. Meanwhile, some Muslim community leaders in a panchayat held yesterday at Balwa village, decided to keep away from the activities of BKU. The panchayat was attended by several Muslim village chiefs in the area. (PTI)
