Strike to protest killing affects life in Manipur

Imphal: A 14-hour general strike to protest killing of a man affected life here on Thursday.

The strike began at 0400 hours and normal life was partially disturbed. Most of the educational institutes at Singjamei, Lilong were closed down as strike supporters blocked roads.

The road leading to Manipur University was also blocked hence attendance was thin at the University. Hawaijam Meghachandra (50), of Lilong Chajing Meirangkhong Leikai was found at Imphal river on November 5 last.

His body also bore bullet wounds. Meghachandra was the President of Meirangkhong Rising Club.

According to the strike supporters Meghachandra had some telephonic conversation on November 4 with unknown people and he went missing.

National highway no 2 was also blocked and movement towards the border town of Moreh was also disrupted.

Joint Action Committee (JAC) was formed and a memorandum was submitted to Chief Minister O Ibobi urging him to arrest the perpetrators.

Civil organisations of the state have also supported the strike and there is no report of any untoward incident so far. (UNI)
