Guwahati: Growing belligerence shown by a couple of Meghalaya-based insurgent groups in areas along Assam-Meghalaya boundary has worried Assam government which has given emphasis on close coordination between Assam Police and Meghalaya Police in taming the ultras belonging to outlawed Garo National Liberation Army (GNLA) and United A’chik Liberation Army (UALA).

Assam chief minister Tarun Gogoi on Saturday said vigil along the inter-state boundary had been stepped up and joint operations were being conducted by the police forces of the two states now.

“DGPs of both states have been in touch and our deputy commissioners and SPs are also coordinating with their counterparts in the adjoining districts of Meghalaya,” Gogoi informed.

Gogoi expressed grave concern over the growing activities of armed rebel groups along the inter-state boundary between Assam and Meghalaya in the wake of GNLA and UALA militants making several major strikes in the past one week.

“Several insurgent groups have become active along the inter-state boundary. The security forces have ascertained that the killing of seven persons in Gendabari village in Goalpara last week was the handiwork of the UALA. The GNLA has also stepped up its activities on the Meghalaya side close to our districts,” Gogoi said.

“It is a matter of concern for us particularly because the area is close to the Bangladesh border,” the chief minister said.

The chief minister said activities of different armed underground groups were growing ‘dangerously’ in the Meghalaya districts adjoining Goalpara in Assam and ‘ they have been providing shelter to the outlawed ULFA and NDFB factions of Assam’.
