SHILLONG: Four arm wrestlers from Meghalaya, including three women, will take part in the upcoming World Arm Wrestling Championship, which will be held in Chandigarh from November 21-25.

The athletes taking part are Aiboklin Rina (70kg), Badalin Kharbyngar (55kg), Diana Jyrwa (50kg) and Jerrybert Rangad (below 80kg).

Informing this here at a press conference on Tuesday, Meghalaya Arm Wrestling Association (MAWA) general secretary Junestar Kharbuli said that the association has always been invited to participate in this tournament.

“We have not been able to participate in the past as the tournament was held in foreign countries and we could not afford the expenses. It is a great thing that this event is being in India this time round,” Kharbuli said.

Kharbuli also informed that the sport has very good potential in the state but the government has overlooked the talent of the youngsters and has never tried to lend its support to the sport.

The total cost of the participation of the team from Meghalaya is approximately Rs 1,40,000, which includes participation, registration and travel expenses of the players, two officials and two referees.
