NONGSTOIN: The Shallang Area Labour Association (SALLA) in a public meeting at Nongdaju, West Khasi Hills, has decided not to allow any non-tribal labourer to work in and around Shallang.

K Nongsiang, general secretary of SALLA, informed media persons here on Tuesday that the Association has decided to set a 15-day deadline for all non tribals to leave the coal depot in and around Shallang area.

“The Association has decided that the rate to unload the coal laden truck will be Rs 2500 and has also decided that Khasi and Garo labourers would be allowed to set up camps near the coal depot,” Nongsiang said.

The Shallang Area Labour Association has, further, decided to issue identity cards to all the local labourers on November 20.

He also said that this policy is to ensure the longevity and protection of the tribal communities in Shallang area.

The meeting was attended by members of the SALLA and more than 700 villagers from in and around Shallang area.
