Kidnap bid foiled, GNLA rebels arrested

TURA: A two-member team of GNLA militants deputed to Tura to extort money and kidnap an influential businessman have been arrested on Wednesday.

The two GNLA militants who had taken shelter in a house in Boldak A’ding, under Dobasipara police outpost, were arrested by a special police team just as they were passing through the main thoroughfares of the town to commit their abduction.

Police sources revealed that the militants’ high profile target was an IT (Information Technology) professional.

Both militants, traveling in a two wheeler were intercepted, and from their possession security forces recovered two automatic pistols with six rounds of live ammunition and two mobile handsets.

The arrested militants have been identified as Goera D Sangma (27) of Salmanpara village in South West Garo Hills district and Sengsal R Marak (22) of Dadenggre region in West Garo Hills.

“They belonged to GNLA’s Baichung Momin command and had planned to conduct a series of extortion cases and abduct several prominent businessmen,” revealed district police chief Mukesh Kr Singh, IPS.
