Three of a family killed for allegedly practising witchcraft

Nagaon (Assam): Three of a family, including a woman, have been allegedly killed on the suspicion of practising witchcraft and their bodies recovered on Wednesday in Assam’s Nagaon district, police said The bodies of the two brothers and the wife of one of them, missing since last week, was recovered from a pit dug to bury them in Ranglur Pukhuribasti. The son of the missing couple had gone to neighbouring Karbi Anglong and on his return found his parents and uncle missing from home following which he filed a complaint with the police. The police had taken 20 persons into custody and based on the interrogation of some, dug the pit in the nearby field and recovered the bodies today. The dead persons have been identified as Hangra Bey, Sombar Bey and Engley Rongpharti. The police suspect that the trio were killed for allegedly practising witchcraft and further investigations were on. (PTI)

Assam youth goes missing in Bangalore

Guwahati: An Assamese youth preparing for CAT examination has allegedly gone missing from Bangalore under mysterious circumstances. Joydeep Paul (23) went missing on November 10 from a private accommodation where he was staying while preparing for the prestigious management examination. A resident of Karimganj in Assam, his father Vivekananda Paul told PTI, “The owner of the hostel saw him last during the evening of November 10. After that, neither we nor anyone in the hostel got any communication from Joydeep.” The parents, who are at present camping in Bangalore, had last spoken to their son three days prior to he going missing.”We do not know whether it is a case of kidnapping or escape (by the youth). He had in fact asked for Rs 10,000 during our last communication and we sent that money. However, he did not withdraw it from the bank,” the father said. Joydeep had completed his BTech from the National Institute of Technology in Tiruchirappalli in 2011. After that he was staying in Chennai to take private coaching for CAT entrance examination. He had appeared for it in 2012 from Chennai, but did not qualify. “He then came to Bangalore in June to appear for the CAT test from here. We now do not know whether he appeared for the exam this time,” the father said. (PTI)

Journalist passes away

Itanagar: V Ravindran Nair, one of the prominent journalists of print media in Arunachal Pradesh passed away on Wednesday morning after a brief illness.He was 52.He was a visiting faculty of the mass communication department of Rajiv Gandhi University. On receiving the news from Dawnlit Post editor Gabriel D Wangsu, the deceased’s brother-in-law requested the media fraternity to conduct the last rites here.“I am extremely grieved and pained at the demise of Ravindran, who has been an epitome of journalism in Arunachal Pradesh since the inception of mass media in the state,” Chief Minister Nabam Tuki said in his condolence message. Ravindran, who hailed from Palaghat in Kerala, had joined the Echo of Arunachal, three months after the first newspaper of the state was launched. He joined Dawnlit Post in 1998. (PTI)
