NEW DELHI: After the 500 bed hostel for working women of North East in Delhi which was opened recently, Chief Minister Dr Mukul Sangma has sought for a separate hostel cum transit camp for men folk from Meghalaya in the national capital.
In a letter to the Union Minister for Urban Development, Kamal Nath, Dr Sangma said that many students and youths come from the hill state to the capital for study, training, job and other purposes. They are in need of some accommodation even if it was temporary in Delhi where hotel rates are very high and not available often.
A five storied 500 bedded hostel for the working women from the North East opposite landmark Apollo Hospital was established last year.
The hostel meant for single women from the region including students was a joint initiative of Ministry of Women and Child Development and Ministry of Development of North Eastern Region with active help from the North Eastern Council.
Every year, over 10,000 undergraduate students from outside Delhi take admission in colleges affiliated to the Delhi University many of whom are from Meghalaya.
