Kerala should develop clean green industries

Kochi: Focussing on exports, Kerala should develop clean green industries, Former President Dr APJ Abdul Kalam on Friday said. Inaugurating the silver jubilee celebrations of Cochin Export Processing Zone Industries Association here, Kalam said Industrial production of the state should be tripled within the next 5 years. Skill development of the youth has to be accelerated towards industrialisation and capacity building should be the major activities of industries association, he said. He suggested that Special Economic Zones should create an Industrial Ecosystem aiming at capturing the Global market which will further enhance the state’s per capita income. According to Kalam, this is the opportune time for encouraging innovation to rejuvenate agricultural sector, particularly value addition. He said even as the world and the country are impacted by global economic crisis, innovation and out of box solutions are called for. “We need to find new product ideas and processes which can be created by our indigenous talents,” he said. Acid attack victim dies

Ludhiana: A 22-year-old bride, who suffered serious burn injuries in an acid attack, breathed her last on Friday at a Mumbai hospital. The victim Harpreet Kaur was shifted from DMC Hospital, Ludhiana to National Burns Centre, Mumbai for treatment on December 12. Her body will be air lifted to her native town Barnala, said Nirmal Singh Dhillon, Police Commissioner Ludhiana. The victim had gone to a beauty salon in Sarabha Nagar for her bridal make-up shortly before her marriage on December 7 when the accused youth barged in and threw acid on her. Three other women present there were also injured in the attack. Ludhiana police had arrested one Amitpal Kaur, the divorced wife of the elder brother of the groom, alongwith her paramour and five others in connection with the case. During interrogation, she told the police that she was envious of seeing the family happy since her divorce, and sought help from her paramour to scar the bride with acid on the day of her wedding. Kaur told the police that she attacked Harpreet so that no one dares to marry their daughter into the groom’s family. The victim had sustained 45 per cent burns including her face, eyes, chest and abdomen were affected. (PTI)

FIR against senior official in loco inspector suicide case

Kanpur: Four days after a loco inspector, posted at Central Railway station here, allegedly committed suicide, an FIR has been lodged against a senior official posted in Allahabad in the case, police said on Friday. Loco Inspector Gyanchandra jumped before a goods train on December 23. Police found a note from Gyanchandra’s pocket alleging that a senior official posted at Allahabad used to mentally torture him and is responsible for him taking the extreme step. “Based on his suicide note, we have lodged the FIR against Divisional Mechanical Engineer V K Gautam, posted at Allahabad, under section 306 (abetment to suicide) of the IPC,” said GRP Circle Officer Surendra Tewari adding he is yet to be arrested. The senior railway officials have been informed about the incident and a probe has been initiated in the matter, he said. (PTI)
