New year celebrations marked by brawls

SHILLONG: Despite the precautionary measures talked of by the police, the New Year celebrations witnessed several brawls in the State including the capital city leading to injuries to several persons.
To start with, at around 10.30 pm on December 31, unidentified miscreants assaulted two persons at Umtyngar Bridge in East Khasi Hills. The injured persons have been identified as Khrawbok Lyngdoh (36) and Arborstar Kurkalang (27). Both of them sustained injuries and were taken to Shillong Civil Hospital for treatment.
On the same night, unidentified miscreants assaulted one David Sawkmie at Police Bazar. The victim sustained injuries in the incident and was admitted to a city hospital for treatment.
Again, at around 1 am, unidentified miscreants assaulted Denispak Jala (32) at Laitryngew, Sohra (EKH). The victim sustained injuries was taken to Shillong Civil Hospital for treatment.
An incident of stabbing was reported from Ri Bhoi on January 1 at around 8 pm when one Md. Sikander Ali (28) stabbed Rambilash Paswan (55) with a sharp weapon at Nongpoh. The victim sustained injuries in the incident and was shifted to a hospital in Guwahati.
In addition, several roadside brawls were also seen during the New Year bash though many have been reported to the police.
The police had on Monday last claimed that efforts would be made to ensure the new year celebrations pass off peacefully.
