Arunachal Governor pays homage to ’62 martyrs

Itanagar: Arunachal Pradesh Governor Lt Gen (Retd) Nirbhay Sharma has paid homage to martyrs of 1962 war at the Saheed Smarak popularly known as ‘Hut of Remembrance’ in remote Anjaw district bordering China. Sharma also on Saturday laid wreaths at war memorials of Walong and Namti Plains and visited the Namti Valley, where fierce battle was fought in 1962 by the Indian forces against the Chinese.
The Governor, on a two-day maiden trip to the district, said at a meeting in Walong, “The district is not only an important part of the state but of the country as well. “People of the country feel proud of you as you are the sentinels.” Emphasising on development in the border areas, Sharma said that the state government, Centre and public have to work jointly to bring the much needed change in education and health sectors.
He called upon the local youth to prepare themselves to join the second battalion of Arunachal Scouts and appealed to the public leaders and Goan burahs to groom their children for job in the Indian Army. Stressing on proper utilization of allotted government fund, the governor said that it was the duty of public leaders, district officials and also the general public to ensure that projects are implemented as per specification.
He added that development model should be according to the needs of the area. Stressing on improving the education sector in the district, Sharma advised the department to develop a model to train existing teachers to be trained specifically for subjects like mathematics and science through orientation programmes.
He expressed concern over the low literacy among the female population in the district. The governor also inspected the work on Walong Advanced Landing Ground during his tour, sources added. (PTI)
