Tension in Tripura village after girl’s death

Agartala: Tension gripped in West Taranagar village in the outskirts of Agartala following the alleged murder of a girl belonging to Muslim community.

Natasha (20) was burnt to death, a day after her male friend, Sanjib Das (25), who belonged to Hindu community, allegedly committed suicide near her residence.

Police here said both the families were against the inter community alliance and that it could be the reason behind their deaths.

The girl’s family, however, lodged a complaint that she was abducted from the house by some miscreants and was set on fire after committing rape.

Sub-divisional police officer (SDPO) Sanjoy Biswas said an investigation has begun and police is taking into account all the possible angles of the incident, adding that extra forces have been deployed in the locality to cease the tension.

Jamaat Ulema Hind leaders led by its state president Mufti Taibur Rahaman had visited the village and demanded impartial investigation into the death of the girl.

It was in recent times that the family came to know about their relationship and they along with their neighbours expressed high objection on such inter-faith alliances and also threatened Das of dire consequences.

According to police, on January 9 last, the girl received an SMS from her beau expressing his love for her and asked her to “stay safe and happy”. On the next morning, Natasha found him hanging near her house.

On January 11, Natasha went outside her house and was later found in a burning state at the same spot where Das was found hanging..

A suicide note and a can of kerosene oil were also found on the spot. (UNI)
