Stay sought on dist council polls

SHILLONG: The Meghalaya High Court has fixed January 27 as the date of hearing of the case filed by the Khasi Hills-based MDCs and the civil society members of Jaintia Hills seeking a stay of the KHADC and JHADC elections.

After the traditional chiefs and pressure groups of Jaintia Hills filed a writ petition in the Meghalaya High Court, on January 7, another petition was filed on Monday by four MDCs of KHNAM, Latiplang Kharkongor, Adelbert Nongrum, James Ban Basaiawmoit and Carmel Sohtun claiming that the delimitation process was faulty and the matter was taken up by the Court on Tuesday.

While the Government was represented by the Advocate General CD Kynjing, the District Council was represented by its counsel Advocate VGK Kynta.

Kynta challenged the admissibility of the petition and also the interim stay sought by the petitioners. Petitioners were represented by K Paul.

Judge S R Sen was neither inclined to grant any interim stay, nor admit the writ petition. However, he issued notices to the Chairman of Delimitation Committee and its members for their views.

Sources said that the maintainability of the writ petition will be taken up on January 27 and the matter will be contested by the Government and district council considering that the elections are round the corner.
