Rally organised as part of Road Safety Week

Traffic police in collaboration with Shillong Region Taxi Operators and Drivers Association on Thursday organized a rally as part of the Road Safety Week that is observed from January 11- 17.

The observation of the Road Safety Week holds great significance in view of the fact that a whopping eight hundred accidents were reported in Shillong city from the year 2009 till September 2013 which claimed two hundred eighteen lives.

The accidents also resulted in the injuries of a whopping one thousand thirty persons.

Speaking to a group of journalists, SP (traffic) NK Syiem asserted that the Shillong Traffic police have raised the matter of putting up caution signboards on accident prone stretches of the roads.

According to Syiem, the traffic police is taking various measures to create awareness about the importance of road safety through placards and safety messages in the electronic boards of the State Government. This is being done to alert the public about various measures that need to be taken while driving.

He stated that police works in collaboration with Dorbar Shnongs to regulate traffic in the localities.

He appealed people to follow the traffic rules for theirs and others safety.

During the rally, many local taxis and buses plied with placard depicting safety instructions to be followed while driving on the road.
