SHILLONG: Pariong sitting MDC Irin Lyngdoh has decided not to contest the upcoming district council election scheduled on February 24.
It is reported that Lyngdoh is totally unhappy with the delimitation of the constituencies since it was done without taking views of the people including the traditional institutions.
According to sources, the sitting Pariong MDC has taken the decision not to contest the upcoming election immediately after Governor Dr KK Paul approved the amendment rules of the KHADC for delimiting of the constituencies.
Lyngdoh who was elected twice as an MDC and once as an MLA from Pariong constituency had voice her strong opposition to the move of the KHADC Executive Committee to delimitate the constituencies since the whole exercise was done hurriedly.
Lyngdoh who was also the former Community and Rural Development Minister had also met the Governor along with her fellow MDCs to oppose the proposed delimitation.
It has been informed that the Mawthadraishan Block Congress Committee (MBCC) was eager to recommend the name of the sitting MDC for the party ticket to contest from Mawthadraishan.
It may be mentioned that following the delimitation, Pariong has been renamed as Mawthadraishan constituency.
With the sitting MDCs deciding not to contest the election, the MBCC is left with no option but to recommend the name of its acting president JC Diengngan for the party ticket.
When contacted, Lyngdoh has confirmed that she is not contesting the upcoming district council election.
“I am not contesting the election due to personal reasons,” the sitting MDC said.
When asked if it was her opposition to the delimitation which has prompted her not to contest the election, she however refused to comment.
