Garo Hills Deputy Commissioner Chinmay P. Gotmare, who had a providential escape from the attack of militants on Friday at 8. 40 pm in South Garo Hills said that he would make a security assessment report to the Government.
On the same night at around 8.30 pm, another government official who was travelling from Tura to Baghmara had to face the wrath of a suspected ANVC militant after his vehicle was fired upon , but thanks to timely arrival of policemen, the official could proceed without any harm.
Speaking to The Shillong Times over phone from Baghmara on Sunday, Gotmare said that he would be sending the report to the Government on the incidents. “We need to know whether the presence of the militants in the high way is due to the understaffing of the police ore not”, the Deputy Commissioner said.
There is a need to intensify patrolling in the area, he added.
According to the Deputy Commissioner, it was after returning from Shillong at around 8. 40 pm on Friday that a group of militants made an attempt to intercept his vehicle at Adugre (Matcha Nokpante).
“When we reached Adugre, we stopped behind a truck and my PSO spotted some militants. The beacons light of the vehicle was off. I told the driver to switch off the headlight of the vehicle. By that time, the militants spotted us and fired in the air and they even shouted us to stop”, Gotmare said.
According to the Deputy Commissioner, his driver took a reverse and drove back the vehicle in darkness to Jaksongram. Later, the SP was contacted to send an escort. “Finally we could reach Baghmara at around 10. 30 pm on Friday, the Deputy Commissioner said.
