SHILLONG: Romeo Phira Rani will contest the elections to the KHADC from Malki-Laitumkhrah constituency as an Independent candidate, ‘according to the wish of his supporters from the constituency’.
Phira has been a veteran in State politics having contested elections as many as nine times in the past including elections both to the KHADC and the Meghalaya Legislative Assembly.
He has held the post of Chairman of Meghalaya Handloom and Handicrafts Development and was member of the Meghalaya Economic Development Council during Dr. FA Khonglam’s regime. He was, earlier, president of KSU Laitumkhrah circle, treasurer of KSU central body, vice president and secretary of Laitumkhrah Sports Club, Treasurer of Meghalaya Chess Association, Rangbah Dong cum Treasurer of Laitumkhrah Main Road and DSC member EK Hills District and Adviser, Meghalaya VDP.
For his social contributions he has received several awards including Vikas Ratan Award, Rashtriya Gaurav Award and Rajiv Gandhi Award.
