SHILLONG: Though everyone raises concern over the environmental degradation but people of Meghalaya are still in the habit of throwing their garbage in the open which only results in littering of the place.

To end the culture of open throwing, the Department of Urban Affairs is now working on a project to distribute 60000 buckets in 30000 households of the city for door step garbage collection.

Speaking to media persons, Urban Affairs Minister Ampareen Lyngdoh said that with the scheme, people would segregate their garbage in their own door step.

Earlier, the first phase of the scheme was implemented in certain places of the city where people were also trained on how to segregate the garbage, adding the State Government has also signed a supply contract with a firm in New Delhi to supply the buckets or the dustbins.

Stating that the local institutions including Dorbar Shnongs need to partner with the Government to stop the menace of rampant garbage disposal, she also appealed to the people not to throw garbage in the open.

It may be mentioned that the Shillong Municipal Board at the moment collects garbage from the residence in different localities.

It is also an open fact that no dustbins are not found in most parts of the city including Khyndailad.

Reacting to a query about the non availability of dustbins in the city, Lyngdoh added that many times the dustbins overspill and it spreads even on to the main road and Motphran junction is the best example where the dustbin often overspills.
