SHILLONG: The Synjuk Ki Rangbah Shnong has expressed stiff opposition to the recent decision of the MeECL to hike the power tariff in 2014.

In a letter submitted to the Meghalaya State Electricity Regulatory Commission on Tuesday, SKRS president T Shanpru feared that the common man would not be able to bear the brunt of the arbitrary hike in power tariff.

According to the SKRS, the MeECL has decided to hike the fixed charge for domestic consumers from Rs 35 per KW to Rs 210 per KW, which is an increase of 500 pc. The SKRS is of the view that hikes in other categories – CIT and ILT – will only result in increased service cost to consumers. The SKRS appealed to the MeECL to take necessary steps to subsidize power, as is being done in several other states.
