SHILLONG: Campaigning for the district council elections, which is just a week away, is yet to take off with various political parties maintaining low profile, especially in the constituencies in the capital city.
While KHNAM president Pyndapborthiaw Saibon termed the low key state of affairs as a common trend in the district council elections, UDP secretary Allantry F Dkhar attributed the sequence of events to the ‘increased political awareness of the masses in urban areas, who prefer to cast their votes as per the call of their conscience’.
Saibon, however, said that KHNAM is trying its best to reach out to as many people as possible advocating the case of its candidates in fray for the district council polls, even as he added that time constraints has restricted the campaigning to an extent.
“As the party president, I have to campaign for other candidates and also for myself,” Saibon, who is contesting from Shella constituency, said.
While admitting that not much was happening in the city in terms of campaigning, Dkhar informed that the UDP leaders are touring various districts to campaign for the respective candidates.
HSPDP spokesperson G Nonglong said that the party, in its own way, has been conducting indoor and public meetings on a regular basis.
“We started our groundwork much before the elections,” Nonglong claimed, adding that the party leaders have been travelling extensively in various parts of Khasi and Jaintia Hills and campaigning for the candidates.
